Viva Vivaldi

190929 VivaVivaldi
This weekend has had more than the usual amount of entertaining events on offer in our area. In Hombrechtikon there was the annual Brunegg festival and the Apple Fair (Öpfelchilbi). Then there there was the 125th anniversary of the opening of the railway line along the right bank of Lake Zurich (Rapperswil to Zurich) which was marked with ride on vintage trains and other historical forms of transport. I would have loved to go and see that, but I was otherwise occupied.
190929 101 Diverticanto
Today our choir - Diverticanto - sang a concert in Zurich under the name of Viva Vivaldi. When I told someone they looked at me and said, “Can you sing Vivaldi?” Well, it is true that Antonio Vivaldi is best known for his violin concertos depicting the Four Seasons and lots of other concertos that he wrote.

And it’s true that the energetic opening part of the Gloria which we sang does sound quite a lot like part of a concerto with voices. But we discovered that there was a lot more to it than that: in other places the voices weave in and out of one another so that the singers have to concentrate hard to avoid getting lost.

Despite the beautiful sunny weather and abundance of leisure activities on offer a good number of people found their way to our concert and enjoyed this glorious and elaborate music.

Apart from the well-known Gloria, we also sang the Magnificat and a lesser-known piece, Laetatus sum (Psalm 121).
