Front-page story

19900321 PrinceOfWalesVisitToYaounde 3
This photograph appeared on the front page of the newspaper twenty years ago today.

Do you recognise anyone in the photo? Well, for a start I am in the photo, the chap with the dark hair, dark beard and white shirt on the right. But the photo wasn’t there because of me. It was rather because of the lady in the broad-brimmed hat and pleated dress who is standing centre-left. That lady, Diana, Princess of Wales, was tragically killed in a road accident in Paris on 31st August 1997 and the following day the newspaper - the Cameroon Tribune - printed this photo. It was a photo which they had already printed over seven years earlier, in March 1990.

How that photo came to be there, and how I came to appear in it, you can read about by clicking here. (The article is one which I wrote for my students as a sample of how to write a narrative).

Since the photo is in black and white, the question arises what colour the Princess's dress was. As far as I can remember it was primrose yellow.

And while the Prince of Wales was cheerfully talking to the crowd, what was the Princess staring at?

Thruppence

Last month I told you that my UK bank had credited me with tuppence  (that is two new pence) interest on my saving’s account. (Read about it).

Today I can report that they credited me with thruppence (threepence, or three new pence, if you prefer). I can’t complain: a fifty per cent increase in interest isn’t bad, is it?
