The nearest we in England have to a national day is 5th November, or Bonfire Night.
It all dates back to November 1605 when a group of men plotted to kill the king (King James I) and members of the government while the king was making a speech in the Houses of Parliament.
The plan was to blow up the building. They got as far as storing 20 or more barrels of gunpowder in a cellar beneath the building, but someone discovered the plot.
King James declared the day, the fifth of November, a day of thanksgiving that the plot was discovered.
The men who wanted to kill the king were all executed. Among them was a man called Guido Fawkes, usually known now as Guy Fawkes, . Children still make “Guys” (cloth effigies of the man). They sit in the street and ask people for “a penny for the Guy” (See the picture). With the money they buy fireworks.
But what happens to the Guy? On the evening of 5th November large bonfires are lit and the Guys are burned.
